Sliding Doors, Hinged Doors or Open Shelving on a Mobile Bar?
Share
Storage access on a mobile bar gets no attention until service starts. Then it matters more than almost anything else on the cart. Every time a bartender needs a bottle, a fresh rack of glassware or backup stock, the way that storage opens decides whether it is a one second reach or a ten second detour. Most buying guides frame this as sliding doors against hinged doors. There is a third option that flat pack bars usually take, and it is worth understanding all three before you commit.
Hinged doors
A hinged door opens into a full, unobstructed rectangle. Nothing sits in the middle of the opening, so it is easy to see everything at once and easy to load bulky or irregular items such as ice buckets, tall bottles and stacked crates in a single motion. That is the real advantage, and for a bar that has to swallow awkward stock quickly during a changeover it is a genuine one.
The cost is clearance. A hinged door needs clear air in front of it roughly equal to its own width, and behind a bar that is exactly where your bartender is standing, where a second person is passing with ice, and where a tray might be going by. A door left standing open blocks a walkway. On a two leaf cabinet it also takes a moment longer to open fully, and it needs propping or holding if you want both hands free.
Sliding doors
A sliding door disappears into the footprint the cart already occupies. No swing radius to plan around, nothing to catch a passing tray, and it opens with one motion and stays out of the way. In a narrow service corridor, or with two bartenders working shoulder to shoulder, that solves a real physical problem.
The cost is inside the cabinet. Because the panel travels along a track, part of the compartment stays covered by the door itself even when it is fully open, and the track takes a little usable depth. The track is also a moving part, which means something that can jam, collect grit at an outdoor event, or need servicing.
What we build: open shelving as standard, doors on request
As standard, Cartssify carts have an open body with a shelf rather than a closed cabinet, so the standard cart has no doors and no lock. If you need closed storage, hinged doors and sliding doors are both available on request, and either can be fitted with a key lock. Doors are a custom option, so ask us for a quote before you order.
Open shelving stays the default for a reason, and for staffed event service it is often the better trade. There is nothing to open at all, so access is as fast as it can be and it is the same speed from either side of the cart. There is no track to jam and no hinge to work loose, which matters on a cart that is assembled and taken apart repeatedly. It is lighter, at 54 kg for a standard cart, and it packs flat to 750 x 1000 x 185 mm. The shelf sits in one of three height positions and carries up to 80 kg, so you set the gap to whatever you are actually storing.
What you give up with the open body is concealment and security. Stock on the shelf is visible from the front unless you position the cart against a wall or use the fold-out worktop sides to shield it, and the standard cart has nothing to lock. If you are handling spirits, cash or POS hardware that has to be left overnight, order the cart with lockable doors, or plan for a lockable container or a venue store room. For a staffed bar where stock is brought out at the start of service and taken away at the end, which is how most event bars actually run, this rarely costs you anything.
Which should you choose?
If your stock is bulky and irregular and you have room for a door to swing, ask for hinged doors. If you need concealed storage in a tight footprint and you can live with a moving part, ask for sliding doors. Either can be fitted with a key lock. If your priority is the fastest possible access, the lightest cart and something that packs into an ordinary car between events, the standard open shelving is why our carts are built the way they are.
If you are not sure, tell us your typical guest count, how many people work behind the bar and what you need to store overnight, and we will tell you honestly whether our carts fit the job.
